Do you want free stuff from my eTrilobite.com store? I hope so, because I’m dead-set on giving it to you! I’ve decided to run a Darwin Day contest! The details on entering are below.
The Prizes:
The grand-prize winner will receive 1 free short-sleeved shirt from the eTrilobite.com store (not a long sleeved shirt or hoodie). The winner gets to choose from any short-sleeved product for sale in the store!
How to Enter:
There is only one criteria for entering — You need to write a Haiku poem about Darwin or Evolution.
For those who don’t know, Haiku is a very short form of Japanese poetry. A Haiku is only 3 lines long! You can read all about Haiku at Wikipedia, but here is the short version. A Haiku has:
- 3 line
- 17 syllables
Lots of Haiku have 5 syllables on the first line, 7 on the second, and 5 on the third, but you don’t have to arrange it that way. You can configure your 3 lines and 17 syllables however you want! Here is an example:
Darwin on Beagle
Discovers Evolution
Hurray for Darwin!
Once you’ve written your poems, email them to me at trilobiteclothing@gmail.com
How to Win!
The winner will be selected by… natural selection. This will take place in two stages, which may or may not be scientifically accurate (probably not).
NOTE: Only legitimate Haiku about Darwin or Evolution will be entered. To enter the battle for evolutionary fitness (and win), you MUST meet this criteria.
- Everyone can submit as many poems as they want, but only one of them will be entered into the final stage of the contest. The poem that makes it will be randomly chosen. Nature is cruel. But don’t worry! Everyone whose poem/s meets the qualifications will have a poem in the final stage!
- The final stage is where the brutal Darwinian struggle comes in. There’s mass extinction afoot, and only one Haiku can survive it! I will randomly eliminate poems until only one remains. This person wins the prize!
Entry to the contest closes at Midnight on Sunday, February 15, 2009. Make sure you make your submissions before then! The winner of the Contest will be announced on Monday, February 16, 2009.

Awesome idea!!
Three lines, 17 syllables. Got it. Did you see that your contest was mentioned in Blog Around the Clock, on scienceblogs? (http://scienceblogs.com/clock/) Congrats!
Are you going to post the entries afterwards? I’m sure people would love reading them!
And how are you randomly eliminating them? Scientifically speaking, I’m just curious of your methods
What an excellent idea! I’m spreading the word to my friends. I may try a few haiku myself.
