Continuing in yesterday’s grand tradition of highlighting the stellar work of other bloggers (because I don’t have time to write my own stuff), I would like to point you guys to Anne Minard’s blog, 100 Days of Science, for a wicked article about saving the world from climate change.

These aren’t your run-of-the-mill “buy a hybrid” type solutions. I quote:

Roger Angel, an astronomer at the University of Arizona, has proposed something even more radical. He wants to fire trillions of sun-deflecting mirrors a million miles beyond Earth using a huge cannon with a barrel more than half a mile across. He’s already got NASA funding for a pilot study, and he’s commissioned an inventor. He knows the cost will be steep — around $350 trillion (100 Days of Science)

A half-mile cannon to stop global warming.  That’s climate science that even the neocon defence hawks can get behind!  On the other hand, $350 trillion dollars is approximately 5 times more than the GDP of the entire world.  Take that, Stimulus package!

Is Global Warming that big of a deal?

It depends. If it’s ONLY going to wipe out the a bunch of major cities because of rising sea levels, maybe not.

If it’s going to cause a major extinction event, then yes, I would say it’s that big a deal.

    Thanks for the kudos, eTrilobite!

Exactly!! And if our planet turns into Mars and/or Venus than yes. See? Crichton knows all…or he did, lol. I, personally, am not worried. I was wondering whether we should worry about it or not. This kind of thing has gone on for millions of years….nearly billions.

What’s worrisome now is that it’s happening much faster. Global warming and cooling happens all the time, but we’ve never seen human-caused climate change.
