Simon and Gould really don’t agree with each other about evolution! Just some background. In Wonderful Life, Stephen Jay Gould presented some views on evolution that were a little “out there.”

A few years ago, Simon Conway Morris (who is featured heavily in Wonderful Life) challenged Gould’s views in Crucible of Creation, presenting a few views of his own that could also be considered a little “out there.”

That’s the basis for this comic. In case you didn’t realize, the characer of Gould is based on Stephen Jay Gould, and Simon is based on Simon Conway Morris.

So who do you think is (was) right? Or, at least, the “most” right? Personally, I tend to side with Gould.

    Joseph:

I tend to err on the side of Gould as well. I think Conway-Morris was far too deterministic in his argument.

This isn’t to say I think that Gould was actually right. I think there’s probably a perfectly acceptable middle ground somewhere between the two extremes. I just think that that middle ground might be a little closer to Gould than Conway-Morris.
